India facilitated the alleviation of an estimated 496 million individuals from poverty between 2011 and 2023, as the proportion of the population experiencing extreme poverty witnessed a marked decrease from 27.1 per cent to 2.6 per cent, according to the World Bank's October 2026 Poverty and Equity Brief. The bank reported that the percentage of individuals living below the lower-middle-income poverty threshold of USD 4.20 per day, assessed at 2021 purchasing power parity (PPP), also diminished from 57.7 per cent to 16.1 per cent during the period. Characterizing the advancement as "one of the fastest poverty declines in the world," the World Bank indicated that India had registered enhancements across both monetary and non-monetary indicators of poverty.
