Conducted in an environment characterized by a resilient Indian economy—where real GDP growth accelerated to 7.8% in Q1 FY2026-27, driven by vigorous manufacturing and services activities—the survey highlights significant sector dynamics. Real Gross Value Added (GVA) increased by 8.2%, alongside an 11.9% rise in gross fixed capital formation and a 7.1% increase in private final consumption expenditure.
However, the survey also noted that CPI inflation reached 4.82% in August 2026, with food inflation rising to 5.95%—indicative of a shift in inflationary pressures compared to previous periods. Despite these challenges, the banking sector continues to show resilience, buoyed by improved asset quality, solid capital buffers, sustained momentum in retail and SME credit, and signs of a broader recovery in private sector capital expenditure. The survey captures critical insights into credit outlook, sectoral demand for credit, shifting risk perceptions, and strategic priorities that are influencing the banking sector landscape in the latter half of 2026.
The results indicate a positive sentiment regarding credit growth, supported by robust demand across retail, SME, industrial, and services segments, despite potential funding challenges and macroeconomic uncertainties. Nearly 75% of respondents anticipate non-food credit growth in the mid-teens or higher on a year-on-year basis for the next six months, with almost all banks projecting at least double-digit growth. Private Banks exhibit the highest level of optimism, with approximately 90% predicting growth in the mid-teens or above, while nearly 75% of Public Sector Banks share this optimistic outlook. Foreign Banks, however, adopt a more cautious perspective, with all participants expecting growth at a modest double-digit rate, reflective of their more selective exposure to specific market segments.
